Xerox got xeroxed.

Microsoft did not invent the gui. Xerox invented the gui. Many other operating systems use a gui, but are not allowed to call their product "Windows" without getting sued. Seems a bit two-faced. Maybe the trademark office will get a clue.

More information:

Home server.

Once you have built your first home server, you will wonder how you ever did without it.

What kind of servers can you have?

$ tasksel --list-tasks |  grep server
i server    Basic Ubuntu server
i openssh-server    OpenSSH server
u dns-server    DNS server
i lamp-server    LAMP server
i mail-server    Mail server
i postgresql-server    PostgreSQL database
i print-server    Print server
u samba-server    Samba file server
u tomcat-server    Tomcat Java server

That is just the tip of the iceberg.

VM Box - You can test out software or a linux distro without worrying about damaging your computer or the rest of your network!
Web Server - Host your own website for free from your home
SQL Server - Run an SQL server with your web server to store all your web-related data and stuff...
DNS Server - Run a DNS Server because its required for Windows domains. ( Hopefully I reworded it correctly)
DHCP Server - Let your server assign IP addresses to your each computer on your network.
VPN Server - When you're on vacation, or even if you're just on your smart phone, VPN into your network to instantly access to all your files! If you have your network firewalled, you can also have safe internet access on your mobile device
File Server / NAS - Who wouldn't love a giant networked hard drive that everyone in the house can share?
Print Server - Share a printer with ever computer in your house.
Computer Backup - Automagically back up all the computers in your house! If you ever have a hardware failure, don't worry! Your data is backed up on your home server
Game Server - Host a private server for your favorite game! Weather it be Minecraft, Terraria, etc.
Seedbox - If you have the bandwidth to spare, go and seed your favorite linux distros! (Or "whatever else" you want to seed wink.gif )
Home Automation - Order the right hardware, and you can use your home server to automate your house! You can simpily turn off and on your lights just by speaking! There are a ton of cool things you can do with home automation.
Render Box - If you use any Auto CAD or Blender, use your server to help with rendering
Web Cache - You can install squid, and set it up as a web cache. By saving the most used resources locally, web caching can speed up web browsing.
FTP Server - Run a FTP server, and access your files from anywhere in the world! use FTPS to encrypt your FTP traffic protect your data.
Teamspeak/Mumble/Vent Server - Tired of spending money to rent a VOIP server? Just install the server for your favorite VOIP client, and you'll no longer have to pay!
Email Server - Want to get a custom domain name for your email address? Just run an email server on your home server!
Gateway - Replace your router with an IPFire server to gain access to tons of settings and features that your normal router doesn't provide.
Firewall - Protect your home network from threats by using a firewall on your gateway!
Media Server - Stream music and movies from your home server to your TV/Xbox/PS3/Computers/Other by using your home server as a media server.
Active Directory - Login to your computers, just like in a corporate network. An AD lets you manage user accounts and permissions across your whole network.
Snort Server - Run a snort server on your gateway to protect your network from malicious attacks that a normal firewall wouldn't block.
DVR (PVR) - Record Your favorite TV shows to watch later
Home Security - Record Surveillance cameras footage for home security.

FOLDING!!! - If you can't find anything better to do with your server's left over performance, Fold! It only uses the idle clocks, so it won't slow down your server!

Presidential tech support.

"No, Mr. president, issuing an executive order will not automatically fix your computer."

Remember your first standalone arduino?

You jumped for joy when it worked.

Joy to the world.

Joy to the tech world.

Joy to the World, the Tech has come!
Let earth receive her system administrator,
Let every user prepare Him room at your computer desk,
And Cloud server and network sing,
And Cloud server and network sing,
And Cloud server, and Cloud server, and network sing.

more coming....

Joy to the world! The Lord has come
Let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing

Joy to the world! the Savior reigns
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods
Rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy

Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found.

What cable cutting?

A cartoon history in steps.

1. Dialup generation before cable.

2. Early ISP before digital  media. Analog antennas still.

3. Cable companies try to control your media with boxes. Digital media converter boxes replace the analog sets

4. Cable controls all your media devices unless you have a separate network..

You lost the analog connection to save money, but the digital connection has control over you again.

Apple 3d printer.

Makes no sense. Their patent should have been rejected.

Probably no better but it makes more sense to me.

Primary colors:

Cell phone industry demise.

First code

Everyone remembers their first computer. But do you remember the first code you developed whether for money or not.  Mine was on the Commodore 64.

Twas the night before/

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Net...

I didnt write this from scratch.  I found a version on the 'net and modified it to fit my style.  Please feel free to make comments.  Enjoy!

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Net,
There were hacker's a surfing. Nerds? Yeah, you bet.
The hard drives were stacked by the magnets with care,
Just in case FBI soon would be there.
The newbies were nestled all snug by their screens,
While visions of Java danced in their dreams.
My wife on the sofa thinks I’m a crackpot,
I just finished installing Linux, on my brand new laptop.
When out in the Web there arose such a clatter,
I jumped to the site to see what was the matter.
To a new page my PC flew like a flash,
Then made a slight gurgle. It started to crash!!
I gasped at the thought and started to grouse,
Then turned my head sideways and clicked on my mouse.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
My PC jumped to a page that wasn't quite clear.
When the image resolved, so bright and so quick,
I knew in a moment it must be st_nick1

More rapid than mainframes, more graphics they came,
Then Nick glanced toward my screen, my PC called them by name;
'Now Compaq! Now Acer!', my speaker did reel;
'On Apple! On Gateway!' Santa started to squeal!
'Jump onto the circuits! And into the chip!
Now speed it up! Speed it up! Make this thing hip!'
The screen gave a flicker, he was into my RAM,
Then into my room rose a full hologram!
He was dressed in all red, standing in my home,
Little did I know, I was 'bout to get Pwnd.
He pulled out some discs he had stored in his pack.
Santa looked like a dude who was rarin' to hack!
His eyes, how they twinkled! His glasses, how techno!
This ain't the same Santa that I used to know!
With a wink of his eye and a nod of his head,
Santa soon let me know I had nothing to dread.
He spoke not a word, gave my PC a quick poke,
And accessed my C drive with barely a stroke.
He defragged my hard drive, and added a DIMM,
Then threw in some cool games, just on a whim!
He worked without noise, he upgraded by drive!
He change it to a solid state, much to my surprise!
He updated Office, sent old files to recycle,
Then added a screensaver, with a Tron Light Cycle!
My eyes widened a bit, my mouth stood agape,
As he downloaded bootleg DVDs of Stargate!
The drive gave a whirl, as if it were pleased,
St. Nick coyly smiled, the computer appeased.
Then placing his finger on the bridge of his nose,
Santa turned into nothing but ones and zeros!
He flew back into my screen and through my uplink,
Back into the net with barely a blink.
But I heard his sweet voice as he flew from my sight,
'Happy surfing to all, and to all a good byte!'
Merry Christmas everyone!  Hope you got at least a chuckle from that.
